It seals the joint between engine parts so oil, fuel or exhaust gas cannot leak out.
Replace it whenever the joint is opened, or when you see oil or gas leaking from that joint.
Clean both faces completely, fit the gasket dry (unless the manual says otherwise) and tighten the bolts evenly in a cross pattern.
